What is testosterone therapy?
Testosterone therapy, also known as testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) or androgen replacement therapy, is a treatment that helps raise low testosterone (“low T”) levels in men back to normal. It usually involves getting testosterone injections, gels, patches, or pellets from your doctor.
Some key things to know:
- Why do men get low testosterone? Testosterone naturally decreases as men age, causing unpleasant symptoms like low energy, reduced muscle mass, lower sex drive, and erectile dysfunction. Other issues like obesity, injuries, and chronic illnesses can also lower T levels.
- Who is a candidate for TRT? If blood tests confirm clinically low testosterone along with symptoms, TRT may help. It works best for men under age 65. Your doctor will rule out other issues first.
- What are the benefits? TRT can successfully relieve low T symptoms when properly administered. It can help men feel more energetic, recover lost muscle mass, reduce body fat, strengthen bones, improve mood, and restore sex drive and performance.
- What are the risks? Potential side effects include acne, breast and prostate growth, testicle shrinkage, infertility, and higher red blood cell counts. It also carries heart attack and stroke risks if dosage is too high. Frequent blood work helps mitigate risks.
- How is it administered? Options include injections (every 1-2 weeks), daily gels, occasional patches, and implanted pellets (every 4-6 months). Each has pros and cons to discuss with your doctor.
